In 2010 IACC reportedly received 16,666 animals. IACC reporting tells us that 55% of the animals that come to our city shelter are destroyed. Studies report that 90% of animals killed in municipal shelters are adoptable. The other 10% are euthanized (true meaning of the word) because of irremediable suffering. Doing simple math, 55% of 16,666=9166 animals were destroyed. 90% of those animals (8,000+) were adoptable and killed with tax-payer dollars. Translation: $1.8M+/yr of tax payers’ dollars are applied to killing adoptable animals.
Indianapolis city administration is able to find $33.5M to subsidize professional basketball and loan $98M to a private contractor to build the North of South Project. Why is there no money for the staff and animals at the IACC division to get an upgrade of the antiquated HVAC system to help with disease control, have adequate staffing or full time veterinary care?
